5th September 1986. A 23-year-old braveheart, Neerja Bhanot gave her life away to save 359 lives on a Pan Am flight. Neerja was a flight attendant on the ill-fated Pan Am Flight 73, which was hijacked at Karachi. Posthumously, she became the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime military award for bravery, the Ashok Chakra.
Not only did she had guaranteed the failure of the hijacking by keeping the plane from getting off the ground, but also ensured the safety of the American passengers by hiding their passports.
