City-life in Kolkata jolted today when a portion of a 2 km long flyover collapsed in the afternoon. The Vivekananda Road Flyover has been under construction since 2009. Meandering through the retail business hub of the city, Burrabazar, the bridge seeks to solve the problem of traffic congestion. The concrete of the collapsed portion had just been laid last night. It was connecting the two completed at the Ganesh Talkies-Chitpore Road intersection. Indian company IVRCL was building the bridge.
A bus and a couple of cabs have been stuck under the debris of the fallen structure. The CCTV footage released, shows two auto rickshaws and a cab were just beneath, when the concrete structure fell with a thunderous sound.
